Common Mistakes While Using the Answer Key
Here are 5 major mistakes candidates should avoid while using the answer key:
- Treating coaching answer keys as the final answers is a major mistake. Each institution gives their own set of answers. There’s a reason why the final result is declared by UPSC itself, till that’s not released, it’s not a full-fledged calculation. So till the time the result is not declared, there are a lot many things you’re unsure about.
- Ignoring negative marking leads to inflated scores. Candidates must deduct marks for incorrect answers as per CAPF Paper 1 marking scheme while evaluating performance. CAPF Paper 1 Marking scheme as +3 for correct answer, – 3 marks for a wrong answer.
- Paper 2 doesn’t come with an answer key – It’s a subjective paper where answers are checked on the basis of relevance, accuracy, coherence, and flow. So comparing your answers with others will not do any good as you never know what the actual answer must be
- Relying on unofficial cut-off predictions can be misleading. Actual cut-offs vary each year based on difficulty level, vacancies, and overall candidate performance trends.
- Not Continuing further preparation- Many people check results or analyse on an answer key, find a satisfactory result, and rest. However, one must continue his fitness tests for PET/PST along with preparing for interviews for the ones who are lucky in paper1 and 2.
- Focusing only on marks instead of analysis reduces improvement. Reviewing mistakes helps identify weak subjects and strengthens preparation for future attempts effectively.
| Mistake | Why It Hurts | The Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Using the wrong answer key set (A/B/C/D) | Entirely incorrect score - sets have different answer sequences | Verify your set number on your admit card before matching answers |
| Applying the wrong negative marking value | CAPF deducts 1/3rd of a question's marks, not a flat figure | Use (Correct × 2) − (Wrong × 0.66) - see Section 6 calculator |
| Treating unofficial key as final | Coaching keys have a meaningful error rate, especially on current affairs | Use coaching keys for rough estimate only; verify against the official UPSC key |
| Expecting a Paper 2 answer key | Paper 2 is descriptive - no answer key exists | Use the Paper 2 analysis (Section 12) for self-evaluation against criteria, not a key |
| Ignoring the Paper 1 qualifying threshold | Paper 2 is only evaluated if Paper 1 clears the qualifying mark | Estimate Paper 1 first; confirm you cross the qualifying line before relying on Paper 2 |
| Delaying PET/PST preparation | Physical standards take months; late prep risks disqualification | Start physical preparation immediately after the exam, regardless of score uncertainty |
| Missing the objection window | Valid corrections cannot be raised once the window closes | Review the official key carefully and submit representations before the deadline |
