Block mountains form when tensional forces in the Earth's crust cause large blocks of rock to uplift or drop between faults. These fault blocks create mountain ranges with sharp escarpments, unlike fold mountains which form primarily by compressional forces folding rock layers. Examples include the Sierra Nevada and Vosges Mountains.
