UPSC CDS OTA Eligibility 2026 Age, Education, Marital Status & Physical Standards

One common desire among lakhs of young aspirants across India is to serve their motherland as an officer in the Indian Armed Forces but there’s one prerequisite, a checkpoint you must first pass to be eligible for it - the Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination. Conducted every 6 months by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the CDS exam opens avenues into our defence forces.

Here's how the officers training academy (OTA) chennai is unique. It is the only institution under CDSE that is open for both men and women and it's also the most accessible entry point since it accepts graduates from any academic stream. This guide breaks down every eligibility parameter - age, nationality, education, marital status, and physical standards - so you know exactly where you stand before you fill out the application form.

Compared to other institutions such as IMA, INA or AFA, there are somewhat liberal age criteria at OTA, with a minor simplification of no Elementary Math Paper. However, its core eligibility rules are strictly non-negotiable.

The Officers Training Academy, Chennai, grants a commission on the basis of the Short Service Commission (SSC). It’s a short-term engagement for a few years. However, the other training academies - Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA) & Air Force Academy (AFA) grant a commission on the basis of Permanent Commission.

Here are three key distinctions that OTA makes the other CDS eligibility criteria distinct:

• OTA is the only training academy that women are eligible to join in the CDS examination.
• The candidates can be graduates in any stream (there’s no Physics/Maths or engineering degree needed).

Age is as on the CDS-II 2026 application window's closing date. Typically, for the CDS-II 2026 cycle, this is as on July 1, 2026 (candidates born in a two-year range on the said date. Again, refer to the notification for precise age cut-offs, as they do vary by roughly half a year for CDS I and CDS II) but will need checking annually for the precise date.

• IMA - 19-24 years
• INA - 19-22 years
• AFA : 19-23 years (up to 26 with valid DGCA commercial pilot's licence)

OTA’s five-year age gap is the biggest among all the four options. It is ideal for candidates who just miss the IMA or INA age cut-offs.

In order to apply for the Officers Training Academy (OTA) via UPSC Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam, you need a Bachelor’s degree in any subject from any university. Students who are in their final year of college are also eligible, as long as they pass and present their degree before starting training.

This is the most inclusive educational bar among all four CDS academies — INA requires a B.E./B.Tech, and AFA requires Physics and Maths at 10+2 plus a relevant degree.

To be eligible for the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Officers' Training Academy (OTA), a candidate must satisfy the nationality requirements prescribed by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

A candidate must be one of the following:

• A citizen of India.
• A subject of Nepal.
• A subject of Bhutan.
• A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India.
• A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Ethiopia, or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

For candidates falling under the following categories i.e., 'Subjects of Nepal', 'Subjects of Bhutan', 'Tibetan refugees' and 'Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs)', a 'Certificate of Eligibility' issued by the Government of India is mandatory. However, the 'Gorkha Subjects' of Nepal shall not be required to furnish this certificate. Such eligible candidates may be allowed to appear for examination provisionally, but they should furnish this certificate at the time of announcement of final results.

Having Indian nationality may not be the sole criteria to fulfil, in the sense that meeting the age bar, minimum educational qualifications, marital status and minimum medical fitness have to be complied to fulfill the notification of the concerned UPSC CDS.

Candidates in the last three categories need a Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Government of India.

There are different marital status eligibility requirements for the CDS Officers' Training Academy (OTA) males and females candidates.

• Below 25 years: must be unmarried.
• Above 25 years: married candidates are eligible, but family accommodation is not provided during training, and marriage is not permitted mid-training for those still unmarried at entry.

• Unmarried women, or
• Issueless widows who have not remarried, or
• Issueless divorcees (with divorce documents) who have not remarried.

Note: Male divorcees are treated as married and are not eligible for any CDS academy, including OTA.

Qualifying for the Written Exam and the Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview will be meaningless unless you clear the tough regimen of Medical fitness prescribed by the Ministry of Defence.

Medical Disqualifiers: applicants shall be disqualified from services if there is suffering from chronic ear disease, deviating nasal septum, unsettled teeth cavities (14 points minimum required), deformities of vertebral or joint structures of the spine (marked knocks knee, flatness of feet, spinal deformity).

Candidates are strongly advised to get a preliminary medical check-up before applying, since a large share of otherwise-qualified applicants are rejected at the medical stage rather than the written exam.

Note: UPSC specifies eligibility through date-of-birth ranges in each CDS notification. The age limits shown above are indicative summaries; always refer to the notification for your exam cycle to confirm eligibility.

• IMA, INA & AFA are the three branches that offer Permanent Commission (PC) and are exclusively open for unmarried males.
• OTA provides a short service commission (SSC) which is open to men and women alike.
• INA requires one to have an Engineering (B.E. /B.Tech) degree,
• AFA needs physics & Maths in 10+2 level or a BE/B. Tech degree.
• OTA has the largest age eligibility of 19-25 yrs & accepts graduates from any stream.

Eligibility checking normally requires a systematic process where you will go through all the relevant checks, arrange all the documents you have collected and determine your status. 3. Check your nationality/citizenship status against the list above.
4. If married (men, above 25) or a widow/divorcee (women), confirm you meet the specific marital-status conditions.
5. Get a basic medical check for height, weight, vision, and dental points before applying.
6. Cross-verify every figure against the official UPSC CDS-II 2026 notification at upsc.gov.in before submitting your form.

OTA still provides you an entry into CDS at your lowest age bracket (both men and women eligible, and almost every degree). You’ll get a higher age bracket there too compared to the other three academies. Make sure you cross-verify with the current UPSC notification before you file your application for CDS OTA 2 2026 because the cut-off ages are slightly different for the CDS-I and the CDS-II each year.
