NDA Exam Pattern 2026 Marks, Papers & Marking

The NDA Exam Pattern 2026 has been designed to test whether the student is a good scholar, smart thinker, good communicator, has strength of character, leading qualities, and other capabilities to join the Armed Forces of India. The NDA examination is one of the most difficult defence examinations, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission(UPSC).

Preparation begins with a sound knowledge of the latest exam pattern, whether it is the pattern of the written exam or the stages of the SSB interview; every stage has a significant role in the preparation and getting the meritorious rank.

NDA examination has two broad phases:

1. Written exam conducted by the UPSC
2. SSB Interview conducted by the respective Defence services

The NDA hiring process has numerous phases in the evaluation procedure.

Among all the written examinations, the General Ability Test (GAT) carries the highest weight. This test has the objective of examining a candidate's knowledge and ability to utilize the English language efficiently.

It consists of two sections.

The English section evaluates:

• Synonyms and Antonyms

The General Knowledge section covers:

Having an understanding of the marking scheme allows candidates to score higher on the paper and take fewer risks.

Each correct answer will be awarded positive marks as prescribed for the respective paper.

There is a penalty for incorrect answers, which is about one-third of the marks for that answer.

There is no lost score credit for questions with no response.

Candidates should not make a random guess. They have to follow the smart elimination strategy and proper use of time for answering each question; it will increase the score and also avoid negative marking.

SSB Interview comprises a maximum of 900 marks, and the SSB interview is conducted by various interview boards for short-listed candidates who qualify the written exam, and continues for many days, assessing the general attitude, general knowledge, aptitude, intelligence, and potential of the officer-like qualities and capabilities of a candidate.
