World Coconut Day is observed annually on 2 September to highlight the importance of coconut in agriculture, food, trade, livelihoods and various industries.

The coconut palm is often referred to as the “Tree of Life” because almost every part of the plant has economic or practical uses.

What is World Coconut Day?

World Coconut Day is an annual observance that recognises the wide-ranging importance of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera).

Coconut products are used in:

  • Food and beverages: Coconut water, milk and flesh
  • Cooking: Coconut oil and other coconut-based ingredients
  • Personal care: Hair-care and cosmetic products
  • Coir industry: Ropes, mats, brushes and other products
  • Industrial applications: Products made from coconut shell and husk
  • Agriculture and rural livelihoods: Income generation for millions of farmers

History of World Coconut Day

  • World Coconut Day was first observed in 2009.
  • The observance is associated with the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC), which is now known as the International Coconut Community (ICC).
  • 2 September was selected because it commemorates the founding of the APCC.
  • The day aims to promote awareness about the economic and agricultural importance of coconut-producing regions and encourage the development of the coconut sector.
