Why in News?

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav laid the foundation stone for a new T-72 and T-90 tank overhaul facility at the Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur.

The project, estimated to cost ₹472 crore, is aimed at strengthening the Indian Army’s operational readiness and promoting Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence maintenance and manufacturing.

  • The new facility will have the capacity to overhaul 80 T-72 and T-90 tanks annually.
  • The Indian Army requires around 230 tank overhauls every year.
  • The Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), Avadi, currently has the capacity to overhaul 150 tanks annually.
  • The project will help bridge the gap between the Army’s annual requirement and existing overhaul capacity.
  • The facility is being established at Vehicle Factory Jabalpur, a unit of Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), a Mini Ratna Defence PSU.
  • AVNL has around 25 years of experience in overhauling T-72 and T-90 tanks.
