R Praggnanandhaa has created history by becoming the first Indian player to win the Grand Chess Tour. The 21-year-old Indian Grandmaster defeated Fabiano Caruana of the United States 15-13 in the 2026 Grand Chess Tour Finals held in St. Louis, Missouri.
Praggnanandhaa’s Historic Victory
- The 2026 Grand Chess Tour title was Praggnanandhaa’s maiden Grand Chess Tour title.
- Caruana entered the final as the defending champion, having won the previous edition. However, Praggnanandhaa produced a remarkable comeback to finish the contest with a 15-13 victory.
- The final was played across three different formats of chess — classical, rapid and blitz — testing both players’ ability to think strategically as well as make quick decisions.
What Is the Grand Chess Tour?
The Grand Chess Tour (GCT) is an elite international chess circuit that brings together some of the strongest chess players in the world. It combines different formats of the game:
- Classical Chess – players get more time to think and plan their moves.
- Rapid Chess – games are played at a faster time control.
- Blitz Chess – players have very limited time, making speed and quick decision-making extremely important.
The combination of these formats makes the Grand Chess Tour a demanding test of a player's overall chess ability.
Prize Money
The 2026 Grand Chess Tour Finals had a total prize fund of $450,000. Praggnanandhaa received $200,000 for winning the title and also secured an automatic place in the 2027 Grand Chess Tour.
