Why in News?
India is observing National Sports Day on 29 August 2026, marking the 121st birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary Indian hockey player.
About National Sports Day
- Date: 29 August
- Observed in honour of: Major Dhyan Chand
- Purpose: To promote sports, physical fitness, discipline, teamwork and a healthy lifestyle.
- The day also highlights India's sporting achievements and encourages greater participation in sports.
The 2026 celebrations focus on three broad objectives:
- Tribute – Honouring sporting icons such as Major Dhyan Chand.
- Play – Encouraging participation in sports.
- Move – Promoting physical activity and fitness.
The three-day nationwide programme is being organised from 28 to 30 August 2026, involving schools, sports organisations and other institutions.
About Major Dhyan Chand
- Born: 29 August 1905
- Popularly known as: “Wizard of Hockey”
- He joined the Indian Army in 1922 and began his international hockey career during the 1920s.
- He was part of Indian teams that won three consecutive Olympic gold medals:
- 1928 – Amsterdam
- 1932 – Los Angeles
- 1936 – Berlin
- He captained the Indian team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where India defeated Germany 8–1 in the final.
- Padma Bhushan: Awarded in 1956
- Died: 3 December 1979
Important Fact: Does India Have a National Sport?
India does not have an officially designated national sport or national game. Although hockey is often popularly described as India's national game because of its historic Olympic success, the Government of India has clarified that no sport has been granted official “National Game” status.
