Why in News?
India has emerged as an important supplier of petrol (gasoline) to Russia after repeated Ukrainian drone attacks disrupted Russian oil refineries and reduced domestic fuel production.
According to energy analytics firm Vortexa, Russia's seaborne petrol imports rose sharply to around 125,000 barrels per day (kbd) in August 2026. Indian refiners supplied nearly 1 million barrels of petrol to Russia over the previous two months.

Why Did Russia Increase Petrol Imports?
- Russia has a large oil-refining industry and is normally capable of meeting much of its domestic fuel demand.
- However, repeated Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries and energy infrastructure have disrupted refining operations. This has reduced domestic petrol production and created pressure on fuel supplies.
- To meet domestic demand, Russia has therefore increased imports of refined petroleum products from countries such as India, Turkey and Morocco.
India's Role
- India has become an important part of this changing energy trade.
- The Vadinar refinery in Gujarat, operated by Nayara Energy, has been a major source of petrol shipments to Russia. The refinery's connection with Rosneft also adds a strategic dimension to the trade.
