Why in News?
The Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of a bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in Ladakh. The decision was announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 20 August 2026.
Improving Access to Justice
- Ladakh's difficult terrain and long distances often make it difficult for residents to reach higher courts. At present, the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has its principal seats in Srinagar and Jammu.
- The proposed bench in Ladakh will provide people with a closer forum for High Court-related cases and reduce the need for long-distance travel.
