Why in News?
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines have signed an agreement to jointly design, develop and manufacture the ‘Aravalli’ helicopter engine. The engine will power India’s planned 13-tonne Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval version, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH).
Key Highlights
- The programme is being undertaken through SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Private Limited, a 50:50 joint venture between HAL and Safran. The Aravalli engine will have a power output of around 3,500–4,000 shaft horsepower (shp).
- The engine will be manufactured at SAFHAL’s facility in Tumakuru, Karnataka. Its development is expected to be completed by 2032–33.
- The project is significant because it will move India beyond licensed production towards the joint development of a high-power helicopter engine. It will also give Indian engineers greater exposure to advanced engine design, testing and certification.
- Under the programme, HAL is expected to develop expertise in several critical areas, including the high-pressure compressor, power turbine, fuel and oil systems, accessory gearbox and external engine systems. The project will also help build domestic capabilities and intellectual property in aero-engine technology.
