- Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, 78, won the presidential election with 255 votes against 88 for opposition candidate Oli Ahmed.
- Alamgir is a senior BNP leader who has been active in Bangladeshi politics since the early 1990s. He has also served as Local Government Minister.
- The President of Bangladesh is the head of state and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. However, the position is largely ceremonial.
- Former President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned before completing his term due to health concerns. The Constitution requires a new President to be elected within 90 days of a vacancy.
