AIIA Announces ‘Garbhini Mitra’ Course To Promote Ayurveda-Based Maternal Health Support

Why In News?

The All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi launched ‘Garbhini Mitra’ course for the academic session 2026-27 under the Ministry of Ayush. This course is developed to capacitate individuals who will counsel pregnant women and those nursing mothers during pregnancy, post-partum, and post-natal periods.

About Garbhini Mitra Course

  • The six-month-long, offline ‘Garbhini Mitra’ course will focus on Garbhini Paricharya (antenatal care), Sutika Paricharya (postnatal care) and Garbhadhana Vidhi (preconception care). 
  • The course curriculum will include pregnancy diet and lifestyle, pregnancy-friendly yoga, perinatal counselling, newborn massage and first aid, infection control, and management. It also covers topics such as hygiene and sanitation, biomedical waste management, and safety in the workplace.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for the course is passing the Senior Secondary Examination (10+2) from a recognised Board in India and being 18 years of age or older. However, those waiting to appear for the Class 12 exams can also apply provisionally.

Career Prospects

  • After successful completion of the course, the candidates can get employed as Garbhini Mitra assistants, antenatal and postnatal care assistants and maternal health guides. They may also explore careers as maternal health support workers.
  • Employment opportunities may be available in government and private organisations such as AYUSH centres, maternity clinics, NGOs, community-based projects and health and wellness centres.
